Bauxite DreamsWhat does aluminum dream of?

The recycled aluminum in our world has undergone an immense journey. Every step in its creation is part of a global material metabolism. What happens when we let the raw material itself testify about its own origin?

Bauxite Dreams is a spatial installation and ‘sonic essay’ that exposes the invisible life cycle of aluminum. The installation transforms an everyday material into a silent witness of geological time and industrial processes. The story takes you along the entire chain: from the excavation of red bauxite in the tropics, to extreme electrical heat in smelters, to the repeating process of melting and recycling.

The Experience

ECHOBauxite Dreams was developed as part of ECHO, a recurring exhibition exploring the potential of residual materials from industry. Each edition centres around a different material stream. This edition centred around aluminium, sourced from Nedal Aluminium in Utrecht.

14 designers and artists work with what already exists, transforming the material into objects and spatial works. Each piece carries traces of a previous life while opening up new possibilities.

ECHO is curated by Maaike Rabbinge.
